Engine and Mechanical Systems

The companionway stairs cleverly hinge to provide access to the impressive engine room and mechanical space. For regular underway checks, a small door allows one to peek into the engine room without removing the stairs. This space is impressive! No boat of this size or age has a cleaner, better organized and more easily accessible space for the engine and other systems such as batteries, hot water heater, fuel filters, water pumps, refrigeration compressor and fuel day tank. This space is second to none. If complete access is needed, the cockpit sole is removable for standing headroom in this space.

Deck & Hull

The Alajuela 38’s hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass, ¾ inches thick at the keel, tapering to ½ inches thick in her topsides. Foam insulation was later added from the interior and glassed in place to reduce condensation. Her deck is plywood cored fiberglass sandwich.

GIPSY ROSE’s hull is white with black boot stripe and black sheer stripe. Her bottom is painted red. A bulwark with teak cap rail surrounds the deck. Stainless stanchions with double lifelines are bolted to the bulwark. Bronze hawse holes allow lines to pass through the bulwark. Her deck is white with tan nonskid. Forward, there is a dual anchor roller on the bowsprit and manual windlass. A Samson post provides a secure place to fasten lines. Wide side decks allow easy passage fore and aft, and there are stainless granny bars at the mast in addition to stainless handrails along the cabintop. Her cockpit is surrounded by a teak coaming. Cockpit seats are overlaid with teak. The cockpit sole is painted nonskid matching the side deck – this cockpit sole is removable to provide full standing access to the engine compartment. Beneath a small deck space aft of the cockpit is the propane locker. Another lazarette locker is located under the starboard cockpit seat. A canvas dodger provides protection from the elements.

Her keel-stepped mast has one spreader with fore and aft lowers and double backstays. There is a forestay and babystay. The bowsprit is welded aluminum, painted white and built to look like a wooden spar. Chainplates are outboard mounted and easily inspected. The boom rests on a stainless and teak boom crutch when not in use.
