Manufacturer Provided Description
Construction of the H-12 1-2, referred to by her waterline length, by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., began October 1914, with the first deliveries made in the spring of 1915. Any hull that has been in continuous production since 1914 must be satisfying the many requirements of safe and enjoyable small boat sailing. Work started on the present fiberglass version in 1972. The fiberglass mold was made over the original wooden frames. The lead keel is cast in the same original iron mold used by Herreshoff, and the hardware on the H-12 1-2 is almost entirely bronze, cast from the original Herreshoff patterns. The cockpit and deck are reproductions of the early wood boats. With the supply of good quality white oak no longer available, the wood used for trim in the standard boat is mahogany. The method of construction is hand-layered fiberglass mat. The flat areas of the deck and transom deck are reinforced for stiffness by Parabeam, three-dimensional fiberglass. This state-of-the-art core material has the enhanced rigidity without problems of rot associated with wood or delamination with core. Three air tanks are integral with the hull. The spars are varnished spruce with 5-8-inch sail track fastened to the boom, jib club, and gaff. Gaff rig mast has steambent hoops with bronze clips to attach the sail. The Marconi rig mast has a sail track with 5-8-inch sailslides on the luff of the mainsail. New owners will love this boat as so many before them. While the gaff rig, self-tending jib and Sitka spruce spars will be new to many of this generation, they too will quickly learn the ease with which this rig can be sailed, singlehanded. The boat was designed to cope with the rough waters often encountered in Buzzards Bay, and her stability has never been exceeded in so small a boat. Flotation is more than adequate, thus providing additional safety to an already safe hull. The H-12 l-2 and the Cape Cod Bull's Eye have the same hull below the shear line. In comparing the two designs, the differences are: deck layout, the cuddy cabin, wider waterways and the rig; thus it is suggested that they be raced in separate classes.
